Even though you may feel it will be too expensive to hire professional movers, when it comes to a long-distance more you really cannot afford not to. Renting a moving truck and dropping it off in a new location is going to cost a lot more than if you were moving across town and could drop it off where you rented it. In addition, gas is not cheap. Hauling a heavily loaded truck is going to reduce the mileage so you will end up using a lot more and cost you a lot more. Finally, the stress reduction you will experience when you are not worried about getting everything loaded into a truck and driving it a long distance is worth a lot, too.
Get Rid of Things
As you go through your belongings, be honest about what you need and want. You should not take items that have not been used in more than a year or two. Get rid all the broken things you keep saying you are going to get fixed and then never do. While it is okay to keep a few things from when your children were young, you don't need to save every picture they ever drew or every special outfit they wore.
